Don’t Underestimate the Power of Water: Do Not Walk or Drive in Floods

Hurricane Florence is estimated to bring nearly 40 inches of rain in North Carolina. Even 6 inches of rainfall can be devastating, knocking over adult individuals in its paths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters. Waters may hide dangerous debris and powerlines.

Refrain from walking or swimming in flood waters, and do not drive. Prepare for remaining in your home/ shelter until after flood waters drain by stocking up on food and water supplies, batteries, and first aid packs.
