Wild Horse Curriculum Institute at Cape Lookout National Seashore
Join park rangers, scholars, and fellow educators for a week-long institute learning about the legendary wild horses on Shackleford Banks in Cape Lookout National Seashore. Shackleford Banks, the southernmost barrier island of Cape Lookout National Seashore, is home to more than 100 wild horses.

We are specifically seeking teachers working with students in grades 4-12 for this project. Participating teachers will be asked to contribute to a 3-4 lesson unit as well as their own classroom-ready lesson plans during and following the institute. Structured time throughout the week will be provided for curriculum writing, and participants will be asked to submit a first draft of activities by July 15, with a final draft integrating any feedback by August 15.
During our time together in June (26th – 30th), we will travel from Beaufort to Cape Lookout National Seashore Visitor Center via van and/or Shackleford Banks via ferry. One or two days will be classroom-based, learning more about the ecology of the island, biology of the horses, and existing educational resources, and the remainder of the days will be spent in the field with scientists working on the island.
We will provide optional lodging to participants in nearby Beaufort, NC at the Inlet Inn, transportation between Cape Lookout and other sites, and a total stipend of $1200.
Applicants must be comfortable in a moderately strenuous, primitive outdoor environment for much of the day. When on the island, participants will be required to pack in all their needs for the day including water, and pack out all their trash. Upon acceptance, a suggested equipment list will be provided.
