Reporting Options

NC State University strives to ensure that students, faculty, staff and visitors are safe and not subject to further discrimination, harassment or retaliation.

Should you experience or witness discrimination, harassment or retaliation, you have the option to file a report with NC State University and/or NC State Police.

Filing a report helps to inform the university of concerning behavior and conduct impacting our community and permits outreach to those directly affected to promote their safety and well-being.

Review the available Resources for Reporting Concerns.

File a report with the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED).

You are not required to file a report to law enforcement; however, if you believe a crime has occurred, you are encouraged to report the incident. If you wish, OIED can provide assistance in reporting to the police.FILE WITH NC STATE POLICE

Not Sure Where to Report?

For assistance in knowing where to report a concern, you may also  contact CALS HR.

Community members are also welcome to consider the following. Please note that reporting to these departments may not be confidential.

  • If it is an emergency, call 911.
  • If you have experienced an incident of harassment that may be a crime under state criminal law, such as a physical assault, sexual assault, relationship violence or stalking, you can report the concern to NC State Police.
  • If you have experienced or witnessed discrimination, harassment or retaliation, you can report the concern to the Equal Opportunity and Equity.
  • If you have concerns for an employee’s behavior or conduct in association with their position at NC State, report to Employee Relations.
  • If you have concerns for a student’s behavior or conduct, report to the Office for Student Conduct.
  • If you experience or witness an incident of bias that may be neither a crime nor a Title IX violation, report to the Bias Impact Response Team.

Reporting Anonymously

You may make an anonymous report to Equal Opportunity and Equity and/or NC State Police online by not disclosing your name or identifying information. However, please note that NC State’s ability to respond or take further action may be impacted by the level of information available about the incident or the individuals involved.

Report Resolution Options

Consultation

The affected party may seek input from a supervisor, the NC State Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity or University Human Resources regarding how to resolve the concern. Consultations do not require a formal investigation.

To request consultation, call 919.513.0574 or email equalopportunity@ncsu.edu to schedule an appointment. Appointments are not required for consultation but are highly recommended.

Preliminary Review

When an issue has been reported to OIED, an investigator will conduct a preliminary review of the issue to determine how best to address the concerns.

Informal and Facilitated Resolutions

At any time after a formal complaint has been filed, parties may opt to resolve the issue through an informal resolution or facilitated resolution. A facilitated resolution is an informed, signed, voluntary agreement between the parties and NC State to resolve a formal complaint utilizing strategies such as facilitations, educational interventions, or other restorative principles to address the concern, prevent its recurrence, and/or restore the community. The facilitated resolution process allows the parties an opportunity to resolve the issue without a formal hearing and the process is facilitated by a trained, neutral facilitator provided by NC State.

Investigation

Once an investigation is initiated, EOE will notify the respondent. The respondent will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations. EOE will complete the investigation in a reasonably prompt time frame; however, some investigations may take longer, due to the complexity of the issues, the University calendar (including breaks, holidays, or other closures), the availability of parties or witnesses, inclement weather, and/or other unforeseen circumstances.

Additional Information

For more information about resolution procedures, please see the NC State regulations: Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation Complaint Procedure (REG 04.25.02) and Title IX Sexual Harassment Resolution Procedure (REG 04.25.08) and the NC State File a Report website
