Destination Development

Supporting communities across the state as they develop their destination is a key focus of NC State Tourism Extension. This support is offered through various programs, topic areas and research projects.

The Outdoor Recreation Stewards Programwas developed by NC State Tourism Extension to support Montgomery County in developing its outdoor recreation assets. The program works with community members who recognize the value of their outdoor assets and want to learn how to support the development of these assets and have their voices heard by leaders. The program is now seeking interest from other communities.

First Impressions NC was launched in 2023 in partnership with the Community & Rural Development Program. Extension programs across the country have utilized the program to support smaller destinations interested in receiving feedback from first-time visitors. We work with county extension, destination leaders, and Main Street directors throughout the process.

Craft Beverage research has long been a staple of Tourism Extension. From wineries to craft breweries, we have a variety of fact sheets and resources for destinations interested in the importance of craft beverages to visitors and community members.
